Tell me about Lambrusco

Lambrusco is one of Italy’s most misunderstood wines. Its rather dubious legacy is due to the oceans of sweet, soda-pop like fizz exported to the USA in the 1970s. Fortunately, quality Lambrusco is now enjoying a global revival. Go to New York City and you’ll find it poured in restaurants and wine bars everywhere. The reason is simple; real lambrusco is an utterly delicious, food friendly wine. In fact, according to eminent Italian wine authority Ian d’Agata, “Fewer wines, from Italy or anywhere else in the world for that matter, match better with fatty foods”. One of the reasons that Lambrusco is the perfect match for pizza is due to its palate cleansing properties. Lowish in alcohol (typically around 11%), sparkling, fresh and with a good amount of tannin, it is the perfect wine for ‘Gourmet Pizza’ tastings. A few sips and the palate is primed and ready to enjoy a different combination of flavours in the next pizza topping.

Joining us is Richard Klein from Artigiano Imports

Hailing from Emilia Romagna, a region renowned for its delicious and rich cuisine, Lambrusco comes in many colours and styles. Our Italian wine importing friend, Richard Klein from Artigiano Imports, is a self-proclaimed “lambrusco evangelist” who lived in that glorious northern region for 13 years before emigrating to New Zealand in 1997. Richard will join us at Reggie’s to pour and present three different expressions of Lambrusco.
